World Cup 2019 gets underway

We may be biased, but we reckon the Matildas taking part in the World Cup (2019 edition) is getting more attention than the men's cricket team taking part in what passes as cricket's World Cup (and which seems to go on for months!).

That's terrific to see and no more than is due to the squad, shaped by former coach Alen Stajcic over the past five years, to get to the point where they are contenders for the title.

The Matildas themselves have set a goal of reaching the semi-finals which, depending on where they finish in their group, could see them playing the likes of other seeded teams such as host nation France, or Germany, England or the USA, amongst others.

But of course first, there is the group stage to navigate and Australia's Group C, comprising Italy, Brazil and Jamaica, ranked 15th, 10th and 53rd in the world respectively.

Australia's group is just how a World Cup group should be: challenging, competitive but, as the top seed in the group, confident about travelling comfortably to the round of 16.

It kicks-off for us in the unbelievably wonderful time slot of 9pm (AEST) on Sunday 9 June, so both SBS and the impressive team that Optus has assembled should enjoy high viewing numbers.
