Algeria and Senegal to meet in AFCON Final

While the vast majority of the world's sports fans had their eyes glued on England for one reason or another – Formula 1 at Silverstone, the Netball World Cup, the Wimbledon Final and the Cricket World Cup Final – the semi-finals of the African Cup of Nations were held in Cairo.

In the first semi-final Senegal met Tunisia to come out as winners 1-0. However, even with Sadio Mané in the Senegal side, it took 120 minutes with Senegal's goal coming in the 100th minute through a Dylan Bronn own goal after a poor clearance by the Tunisian goalkeeper, Mouez Hassen. Earlier in the match, both sides had missed a penalty in the second half.

In the second semi-final, Nigeria's Super Eagles lost to Algeria 1-2, thanks to a goal in the 95th minute from a free kick by Riyad Mahrez. Earlier in the match, William Troost-Ekong had conceded an own goal in the 40th minute to give Algeria the lead, which Odion Ighalo equalised in the 72nd minute.

Algeria will now meet Senegal in the final on Saturday morning AEST, while the 3/4 play-off match takes place on Thursday morning.
